  National project: Neighborhood Matters!

Safeco Insurance and the YMCA are partners in Neighborhood Matters! - an organized way to inspire neighbors to know and watch out for each other. Employees and volunteers of both organizations are working together over a three-year period to support neighborhood-building projects in five U.S cities including Seattle, Atlanta, Dallas, Indianapolis, and Southern California.

I am the project writer producing internal and external communications at the national, regional and local level.

Agency: sexual assault coalition key informant reports

For a coalition of five community-based sexual assault agencies in King County, I conducted a series of interviews to provide them information they needed for planning. We began by generating a set of questions, which I then posed to dozens of professionals who deal with sexual assault victims. They included advocates, counselors, attorneys, judges, police, therapists, and providers working with special populations.

From the interviews, I compiled summary reports addressing three areas: service and support providers, therapists, and special populations.

City: Bellevue's "Teen Shelter Options" study

For the city of Bellevue, I conducted and documented a study of options for sheltering homeless teens in the community. The report outlined current needs, a range of options, cost estimates, and various models in current practice. My report also addressed the potential ramifications of  legislation on the city's obligation to homeless teens.

County: Snohomish County Children's Commission reports

The Snohomish County Children's Commission engaged me to write a number of reports, including the annual report to the county commission and a health report: "The Status of Children 1-9."

State: juvenile violence reduction comprehensive plan

As staff planner for one of Washington's 52 Public Health and Safety Networks, I researched and wrote a 166-page Comprehensive Plan for reducing juvenile violence on the eastside.

The task involved:

  • Leading a volunteer board through an extensive public hearing and interview process.
  • Reviewing hundreds of reports and documents from local, state and federal agencies.
  • Writing the plan, which formed the backbone of the network's ten-year strategic plan.

Public agency: Family Resource Center business plan

As executive director of Redmond's Family Resource Center, I researched and wrote the agency's first business plan. The plan documented the history of the agency, its products and services, operations, marketing and resource development, financial status and a proposed action agenda.

National conference script

Wrote the script for Search Institute’s 2002 national conference in Minneapolis, “Changing America With and For Youth.”
